Citizen Canine & Feline

A program that promotes pet-friendly housing

We believe responsible pet owners make responsible tenants. This is why we're creating a program to help pet owners find pet-friendly housing and to create awareness among landlords and property management companies regarding the benefits of renting to pet owners. The program is still being developed and we hope to officially launch in the spring of 2019.

Did you know?

  • Lack of pet-friendly housing is the number one reason dogs and cats end up in shelters.

Our program aims to:

  • Increase the overall number of pet‐friendly residential rental units in Mecklenburg & Union County, NC.
  • Educate landlords or property management representatives about the potential benefits of renting to pet owners, including income enhancement.
  • Educate existing and potential pet owners, who depend on rental housing, to prepare and present themselves and their animal companions to a landlord or property management company to increase their chance to secure a rental contract.  This includes a two-hour class for tenants taught by a local expert.
  • Promote pet‐friendly landlords and businesses to prospective tenants by providing listings on PEAR's website and social media.
  • Utilize established PEAR's networks to engage additional animal advocates, rescues, and shelters countywide and beyond to contribute references and serve as a clearing‐house of resources to tenants.
  • Work with Mecklenburg & Union County, NC Animal Services to create a new protocol and/or templates that can be shared with Animal Control departments nationwide to implement a new program for pets being surrendered to a shelter due to landlord‐tenant issues.
